GoatCounter is an open-source, privacy-friendly web analytics platform that offers easy-to-use traffic insights without tracking personal data, cookies, or requiring a GDPR consent notice. It is available both as a free, donation-supported hosted service for reasonable public use and as a self-hosted application, giving privacy-conscious site owners a lightweight alternative to Google Analytics or Matomo.
The project is intentionally minimal: the whole application ships as a single Go binary you can run almost anywhere, and the embedded tracking script is tiny. The feature set is deliberately small - core visitor and page metrics without deep funnels or complex segmentation - which keeps it fast, simple, and easy to self-host or embed on personal and small business sites.
GoatCounter is licensed under the European Union Public License (EUPL-1.2), so you can self-host it for free, modify it, and even ship a commercial fork under the same license. The hosted service is free for non-commercial and reasonable use with donations encouraged, and around 5 to 15 dollars per month for business use. Aimed at developers, indie makers, and privacy-first sites, it competes with Plausible, Simple Analytics, Pirsch, Fathom, and Umami.
