TimescaleDB is a PostgreSQL-based database purpose-built for time-series, event, and analytical data at scale. Delivered as a PostgreSQL extension (and as the managed Tiger Cloud, following the company's 2025 rebrand to TigerData), it lets developers store and query huge volumes of timestamped data — IoT sensor readings, metrics, financial ticks, application events, logs — using standard SQL and the full PostgreSQL ecosystem, while adding automatic partitioning ("hypertables"), high-ratio compression, and features tuned for time-based workloads.
The platform brings time-series superpowers to Postgres. Hypertables automatically partition data by time for fast inserts and queries; columnar compression can shrink storage by up to ~95%; continuous aggregates pre-compute rollups for real-time dashboards; and 200+ time-series and analytics SQL functions (plus data retention and downsampling policies) make working with temporal data easy. Because it's just PostgreSQL, teams keep their existing tools, drivers, and SQL skills, and can combine relational and time-series data in one database — increasingly positioned for analytical and AI/agentic workloads too.
