Half your buyers' research now happens inside an AI answer they may never click away from. If the model doesn't mention you, you don't exist. Here's how to get cited.
The short version: Your buyers increasingly start with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews instead of a list of blue links — and those tools answer the question, citing a few sources rather than sending ten clicks. Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) are how you become one of those cited sources. It's not a replacement for SEO; it's the next layer on top of it. Win it by publishing answer-first, quotable, well-structured content backed by real expertise and a credible third-party footprint — because in an AI answer, if the model doesn't mention you, you're invisible.
For 25 years, the goal of digital visibility was simple: rank on page one of Google and earn the click. That goal is quietly being rewritten. Google's AI Overviews now appear on roughly a quarter of searches, ChatGPT reports around 900 million weekly active users, Google's AI Mode crossed a billion monthly users in 2026, and Perplexity fields hundreds of millions of queries a month. More and more, the research journey your buyers take begins — and often ends — inside an AI answer. The blue link is no longer the destination. The citation is.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the source a search engine uses to construct a direct answer — the box at the top, the AI Overview, the spoken response. Generative engine optimization (GEO) goes further: making your brand the content that generative assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude retrieve, trust, and cite when they answer a user. The term GEO comes from Princeton-led research that first framed optimizing for generative engines as its own discipline.
The distinction from SEO is the unit of success. SEO optimizes for a ranking. AEO and GEO optimize for a citation — being named, quoted, or recommended inside the answer itself. You can rank tenth and still be the source the model quotes; you can rank first and never get mentioned.
This isn't a forecast — it's already the traffic. Consider the shift in 2026:
This is the discoverability side of the same shift we've tracked in agentic commerce and AI agents replacing the front door to software: increasingly, an AI intermediary sits between your buyer and your brand.
Most generative answers are built with retrieval: the engine pulls a small set of candidate sources, then writes a response that cites them. Which sources make the cut comes down to a few things — how directly the content answers the question, how well-structured and quotable it is, whether it carries clear entities and facts, and how much corroboration and trust surrounds it across the wider web. It's the same context-assembly problem we cover in context engineering, viewed from the outside in.
The critical, under-appreciated fact: citations are brutally concentrated. Analyses of Perplexity found that most URLs are never cited at all, while a small share captures nearly half of all citations — and only about one in ten domains gets cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Winning here is less about one keyword and more about being the quotable, corroborated authority on a topic.
Our take: the fundamentals didn't die — crawlable, authoritative, well-structured content still wins. What changed is that "good enough to rank" is no longer good enough to be quoted.
You can't manage what you don't track, and rankings alone no longer tell the story. Monitor how often your brand is named and cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews for your key prompts; measure share of voice against competitors in those answers; watch analytics for referral traffic from AI assistants; and audit which pages actually get cited. A fast-growing category of AI-visibility tools now automates this — treat it as the AEO-era equivalent of rank tracking.
Don't abandon SEO — AI answers are built on the same crawlable, authoritative web, so gutting your search foundation kicks the legs out from under GEO. And don't try to trick the model: hidden text, keyword stuffing, or planting instructions in your page content (a cousin of the interoperability plumbing attackers probe) gets filtered or penalized and burns the trust you're trying to build. GEO rewards substance because the engines are optimizing for answers people trust.
Part of getting cited is showing up where buyers — and the models they use — go to research a category. Saaskart is one of those places: a structured, corroborated presence for software and AI tools. SEO (search engine optimization) is about ranking web pages in a list of blue links. AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the source a search engine uses to build a direct answer, such as Google's AI Overviews. GEO (generative engine optimization) is broader still — making your brand the content that generative assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude retrieve, trust, and cite in their responses. They overlap heavily: strong SEO fundamentals still help, but the goal shifts from a click to a citation.
Most AI answers are built by retrieving a handful of sources, then generating a response that cites them. Engines favor content that directly answers the question, is well-structured, demonstrates expertise and trust (E-E-A-T), carries clear entities and facts, and is corroborated across multiple reputable sites. Citations are highly concentrated: studies of Perplexity found the majority of URLs are never cited while a small fraction capture most citations, and only a minority of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity — so being quotable and widely referenced matters more than ranking first for one keyword.
No — it's extending it. Classic search isn't gone: AI Overviews sit on top of Google's index, and generative engines still lean on crawlable, authoritative web content. The shift is that a growing share of research now ends inside an AI answer the user never clicks away from, so optimizing only for the click leaves value on the table. The 1% treat GEO and SEO as one discipline with two goals: rank the page and earn the citation.
Answer-first content that leads with a direct, quotable response; original data, statistics, and clear definitions; structured formats like FAQs, comparisons, and step lists; content with strong entity and schema markup; and pages backed by genuine expertise and third-party mentions. Generative engines reward being useful and citable, not being clever — write the sentence you'd want the model to quote back.
Track how often your brand appears and is cited in AI answers, not just where you rank. Practical signals include monitoring branded and category prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews; measuring share of voice against competitors in those answers; watching referral traffic from AI assistants in analytics; and auditing which of your pages get cited. A growing set of AI-visibility and rank-tracking tools now automate this.
Not durably. Tactics like hidden text, prompt injection in page content, or keyword stuffing tend to get filtered, ignored, or penalized, and they erode the trust signals engines actually reward. The reliable path is the slow one: be genuinely authoritative, answer real questions clearly, publish original data, and build a credible third-party footprint. GEO rewards substance because the models are optimizing for answers users trust.
